Highway Enhancement Project

The enhancement of the Lugano South–Mendrisio highway aims to improve traffic flow by adding a third lane in each direction. On open stretches, the emergency lane is adapted slightly, while tunnels must be widened, partially including structures. Key interventions include widening the Melide-Grancia tunnel tubes with a new supporting tube and a new tube for the Maroggia-Bissone tunnel. Highway entries and exits will be re-evaluated, along with cantonal and municipal junctions, for better traffic management. The A2 Lugano–Mendrisio highway enhancement follows the current route and can be divided into sequences: Lugano Sud with Pian Scairolo–Grancia, San Salvatore tunnel, Melide-Bissone dam bridge, Bissone crossing, San Nicolao tunnel, Maroggia–Melano crossing, and Monte Generoso base crossing. The route traverses varied and complex landscapes and urban areas of high sensitivity.
